I, ŚETEṈ E TŦE ĆESE ŚX̱ENÁṈs TEṈEW̱ – Walking in Two Worlds tells the story of the W̱SÁNEĆ community's commitment to preserving their SENĆOŦEN language and cultural heritage through an education system rooted in their traditional values. In the early 1970s, with an emphasis on Indian Control of Indian Education and following the wishes of the elders, the existing Day school was replaced by one of Canada’s first Indigenous-run school boards. This new system was established to protect their children from assimilation into the public school system and to ensure their education was grounded in W̱SÁNEĆ language, culture, and values.
Over time, the W̱SÁNEĆ School Board has expanded to include SENĆOŦEN language immersion programs at every level, from preschool through to post-secondary education. W̱SÁNEĆ College was also established to offer higher education that integrates cultural teachings with academic studies. These initiatives have created a comprehensive education system that preserves language and culture while supporting academic success and strengthening community identity.
